I bought flashcards (Winne the Pooh and then a no-name brand as well) at the supermarket and turned them into good tools for my almost 4 year old to learn French vocab. I got blank mailing labels and stuck them over the (English) text that was printed on the cards, and then I wrote the French words on top. I didn't always translate the word that was on the card -- sometimes the word they chose didn't seem to best describe what was going on in the picture.
The cards come with incentive stickers. Once my child is able to look at a card and produce the word(s) alone, we put a small gold star on that card. So far I've got a verbs/actions set and a shapes and colours set.

I like it - great idea! Actually, it works for books as well. I've done that myself, although I wasn't as diligent as you are to write the translation on stickers. Nice touch! I'll do that too from now on instead of scribbling on the sides ;-)

Yep, I decided to write on the stickers b/c I found I wasn't being entirely consistent, and wanted to make sure I ws actually saying the same verb, and conjugated in the same person, each time. The other reason I did it is in case I end up with a francophone babysitter -- maybe s/he will be able to do the flashcards too

Thank you for your kind words in reply to my post. I've been reading your postings and I loved your idea of the flashcards. We have the BBC Muzzy for my son and it did come with some great flashcards but I never even thought of making some of my own for the other vocabulary we work on. (I may need them more than him, he learns it all so easily!) That seems like an idea that has no limit on its applications.
Thanks so much.

I have another idea .I play memory.I turn a picture over and say do you know where the sandpit is?
It works better than flashcards for me. Before he hardly said an English word but now he does. This way it comes more natural, to him. I bought a Engl/ German Memory but I´m sure you can also do it with a normal one.
